Caron Chess is Associate Professor in Rutgers University’s Department of Human Ecology.  Dr. Chess’ research interests include methods to evaluate public participation and study of the impact of organizational factors on public participation and risk communication.  Her current research includes exploration of organizational issues and communication about anthrax in New Jersey, 2001.  She currently serves on the National Academy of Science’s committee on public participation and environmental decision-making and has served on the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Risk Characterization and Board on Radioactive Waste Management, as well as the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on NIH Research-Priority Setting. She is also past president of the Society for Risk Analysis. Dr. Chess has authored not only peer-reviewed publications in academic journals but also materials that are used widely by government and industry practitioners.  She coordinated programs for environmental advocacy groups and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection prior to joining academia.
