Dr. Xiaoli Nan’s research program focuses on persuasion in the contexts of health and risk communication. She investigates a variety of issues including how people form health beliefs and risk perceptions, what motivates people to adopt preventative health behaviors, and the influence of media messages on health attitudes and behaviors. An overarching goal of her research is to theorize the processes through which people are persuaded by health and risk communication messages, as well as offer practical guidance on communicating effectively to the public about health- and risk-related issues. Dr. Nan has published numerous articles on health and risk communication in academic journals including leading communication outlets such as Human Communication Research and Communication Research.
