In January, 2004, Dr. Viswanath joined Harvard University's School of Public Health and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Viswanath was Acting Associate Director of the Behavioral Research Program in the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences. Dr. Viswanath's research interests include mass communication and social change and health communication in both national and international contexts with particular focus on communication inequities and disparities. He is primarily interested in using a macro-social approach to the study of mass communication and public health. Dr. Viswanath received a doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota.
